Human and Emotional Intelligence by Good Ifeanyichukwu

Over the years, research has shown that human as a whole is endowed with Natural Intelligence that stems from the human brain. Humans are known to be highly intelligent and dominant primates on earth, human right from inception have been given symbols and language to freely express themselves as well as communicate ideas and coordinate themselves into productive groups. The ability of the human brain to function positively in a given environmental situation, exerting influence on the people and managing oneself is known as Emotional Intelligence.  Emotional Intelligence is the ability of the human mind to manage and control one’s emotion as well as the emotions of others in order to create a positive relationship with people; the working relationship, romantic relationship, intellectual relationship…

Emotional Intelligence was coined by two researchers, Peter Salovey and John  D. Mayer  who defined it as ‘‘a form of Social Intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotion, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action (1990).’’ Looking from the psychological aspect, the mind is like a battlefield where a lot of thoughts, struggles, strives, etc, goes on. Therefore, the ability to control one’s mind to function according to your biddings for the good of the people and environment, and to manage one’s emotions in a positive way to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict can be seen as Emotional Intelligence.

This concept is a fundamental aspect of human life, it like a survival mechanism to adapt in an environment where one has to manage oneself and relationship with other people. It has to do with the reconstructing of one’s psychic to suppress anger, pain, anxiety, stress, etc, and still be able to effectively act in a favorable condition. It also helps us to reduce risks like health, mental, and relationship.

A song by Rag’n’ Bone Man titled Human, one of his lyrics says ‘‘ don’t put your blame on me,’’ from this, we can deduce it to mean that in a scenario where you are vested with veto power to exert control on the people and the organization, knowing full well that you’re compounded with many problems outside work, the ability of not transferring outside problems into your workplace in order not to restrict your flow of communication with people is what captures the lyrics ‘’ don’t put your blame on me, ‘’ one should be able to control his/her emotions to avoid a negative influence on other people, which could mean that the ability of the human mind to be controlled irrespective of the circumstances that one or the task ahead is otherwise known as Emotional Intelligence.

In essence, Emotional Intelligence by Cherry in his work The Theories of Emotional Intelligence, 2018 is seen as ‘‘identifying emotions in ourselves and others, relating to others and communicating about our feelings.’’ Therefore, the key points as humans in building and managing our emotions are; realization of oneself and that of others, curtailing oneself as well as others, awareness of societal influence on our thoughts, and relationship management with people.
